BACKGROUND

Hepatitis Research Group was established since 1991, as one of the very first research lab built in ITD (previously known as TDRC).

Aside of ongoing research projects, Hepatitis Lab also provides lab tests for public services, e.g. qualitative, quantitative, and genotyping tests for Hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV).

The main experimental works including:

  1. Conventional & Real-Time PCR
  2. Genotyping & Data Analysis
  3. ELISA
  4. Western blot

Hepatitis Research Group has been involved in several collaborating projects internationally. The collaborators as followed:

  1. GWAS Project:
Prof. Masashi Mizokami, MD., Ph.D (NCGM-Japan)
Prof. KatsushiTokunaga, M.Sc., Ph.D (The University OfTokyo -Japan)
  2. J-GRID Project:
    Takako Utsumi, Ph.D,
    Yoshihiko Yano, MD., Ph.D,
    Prof. Yoshitake Hayashi, MD. ,Ph.D,
    Prof. Hak Hotta, MD. Ph.D
    Prof. Ikuo Shoji, MD., Ph.D
  3. (Previous) SATREPS Project:
Antiviral medicinal plants against HCV (Prof. Hak Hotta, MD., Ph.D & NIBIO)

RESEARCH EXPERIENCES

Currently, we are involved in various research projects, focusing on different types of Hepatitis viruses: Hepatitis A, B, C, D, E, G viruses and in as well as Hepato-CellularCarcinoma (HCC).

  1. Hepatitis B virus (HBV).

This is the collaboration project between ITD, NCGM and the University of Tokyo (Japan). The role of HLA genetic polymorphisms and their possible function in HBV infection exclusively in Indonesian patients were analyzed by the use of GWAS (genome wide association study).

  2. Epidemiology and Molecular Characterization of Hepatitis A, B, C, D, E, and G viruses (HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, HEV, and HGV) in Indonesia.
Detection of mutation related to antiviral drug resistance, vaccine escape, and advanced liver disease observed in Indonesian population.

  3. Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC).

This project was designed as the first steps in developing an affordable and a rapid diagnostic kit to detect HCC cases in Indonesian patients. We have a collaboration with Gadjah Mada University for HCC patients sampling. This project is funded by Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education of Indonesia.

  4. Hepatitis Band C viruses (1113V & HCV) co-infected with HIV.
This study focused on evaluating the uncommon genotype / subtype of HBV and HCV in HBV & HCV co-infected with HIV.
