Antimalarial Bioassay

Antimalarial Bioassay Division

NPMRD is an Universitas Airlangga research center that focused on research about drug discovery and medicine development from natural resources. It was developed to support the research collaboration between Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia, and Kobe University, Japan, granted by JICA/JST SATREPS (2010-2014). In the effort to find a medicine, c-NPMRD combines the best science and technology in pharmacy, chemistry, biology, and medical fields, supported by reliable equipment and staff.
Achievement
Screening antimalarial activity of plants which explored from some area of East Java and East Kalimantan showed several potential candidates of active plants. The candidates were ongoing research for their active compound’s isolation and identification.

Ongoing Research
• In vitro antimalarial activity assay including microscopic Giemsa staining and Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) assay to determine the antimalarial activity of samples against Plasmodium falciparum.
• Enzymatic antimalarial activity assay including Malate Quinone Oxidoreductase (MQO) assay and Dihydroorotate Dehydrogenase (DHODH) assay to determine the antimalarial activity of samples especially on mitochondria target site.
